Who Watches the Watchmen, or Who Hosts the Hosting Reviewers?

There are plenty of hosting reviewers out there. We've all seen websites which suggest one hosting provider over another or rank a few of them. You may assume that they're giving you suggestions out of the goodness in their heart, but the reality is that most of these hosting review websites are profit-motivated, which means that their ranking depends on how much the hosting service will pay the reviewer for each referral to their website. With that in mind, you have to see the system for what it is and use it to your own advantage.

These hosting review websites can be a great source of information. Most of the time, they will tell you about deals you can get, save you some money. However, they are still a for-profit website, and with a little searching, you could have figured out that information on your own. These websites are trying to convince you to purchase services from the companies that pay them, and while you may like the prices offered, you should examine each offer closely to make sure that it fits all of your needs.

A Different Way to Look at Hosting Reviews

“Who watches the watchmen?” It's a quote from Juvenal, a Roman satirist, but it brings up a valid point. Many host-review websites are not hosted by the companies they offer to you. Why? Because the company they use is better for their needs than the offers they portray on their website.

Here are some examples (this data is retrieved from whois database on March 9, 2009):

  • top10hostinglist.com – hosted at pair Networks
  • webhostingsearch.com – hosted at DNS Made Easy
  • findmyhosting.com – hosted at INetU

Oddly enough, they don't list their own host as one of their recommended hosts. Why don't they suggest the hosts they use for their own website? They're supposed to be experts in this field, so shouldn't they recommend their own host as the very best to have?

It's something to think about.

This is an excellent point these crappy so called web hosting review websites are nothing more than parasites. I think it's super funny how you have uncovered how they don't even recommend their own hosting provider.

Google, Yahoo & MSN should remove all these crappy websites from their index.
