You’re finally ready to start that personal or business website, but you want the best hosting company for the money you’ll have to fork over. You spend a few days researching web hosting review sites, but all of the reviews seem to be good. Even you know that nothing is universally liked by everyone. Should you believe those web hosting review site testimonials?
To be honest, you should take them with a grain of salt. You have to remember, most of those review sites have to make money in order continue. Usually, the very hosts they’re reviewing are the best paying in terms of ads and other forms of revenue. Also, the testimonials on the hosting sites themselves are usually paid for, or part of the site’s affiliate program.
Search for Patterns
Do web searches on the hosting companies, but type in the name of the host + problem or complaint. Every host has their problems, so don’t jump to conclusions. Look for repeating problems and complaints. Some sites have been known to have little to no customer support, others change prices erratically, some are consistently slow due to server overload, and some even continue to charge their customers after they’ve cancelled the account. Look for the patterns.
If one site has over a hundred complaints about overloaded servers and consistently slow speeds, it’s probably a good idea to listen to them. If, on the other hand, there are only two or three complaints, it may just be the customer’s internet connection. Again, no host can satisfy every customer all the time.
Don’t just let your pocketbook sway your decisions either. That 7.99 a month hosting site might just be overselling itself. Many of the “cheapest” hosting companies tend to make grandiose claims, while not being worth the low cost. Their servers tend to be overloaded; software not up to date, very little if any customer support, and they change monthly rates often without prior notice.
So, spend the extra time researching before choosing a hosting company. It’s tedious, boring, and takes up a lot of time to be sure. But the time spent now will save you grief in the future.
Just think of that used car salesman attitude while you’re reading those hosting site reviews. It may sound like a Jaguar, but you’ll probably end up with a Yugo.
