Publishing a Website

Creating your own website is a simple, cost-effective way to present information to other people. The benefit of an effective website is that it can be accessed via the Internet anytime, anywhere, and by anyone with access to a web browser. Creating your own site consists of the following few steps: creating the content, finding and registering space in which to place that content, posting your content, and, finally, maintaining and upgrading your site.

The content of your website should be unique and original, expressing whatever you want to share with others. It can contain text, pictures, graphics, movies, and other types of interactive material. In order for your material to be interpreted electronically, it needs to be written in language known as Hyper Text Markup Language or HTML for short. However, there are many programs such as Microsoft FrontPage or Adobe Dreamweaver, for example, which can simplify the process for you, converting your normal text or layout into HTML, or web pages.

Once you have created the web pages, you need to publish them. Most people do not have the dedicated computer space to allow their pages to been seen anytime without the fear of crashing. They choose to rent space from a web hosting site. There are many companies offering a wide variety of related services, including email hosting, web page templates, message boards, and more. Be sure to shop for the company that has enough space and additional features to meet your needs.

Once you have found a host site, you need to register your site so that others can find it. Many web hosting companies will do this for you and there are several more who will exclusively register your website’s name, also called a domain, for you. Your domain is uniquely yours and will help others to find your site.

Now you have the content and the space to store it. All that remains is to connect the two – or, in computer parlance, upload your web pages to your domain. This is done through a program called a File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Some web hosting sites require their own FTP software while others require you to upload manually through a FTP program that you have previously downloaded to your computer. Be sure to keep a copy of all the web pages, or files, that you upload so that you have a backup and can make changes without having to take your site offline.

Anyone can create simple web pages for themselves; and, with study and practice, you can create very professional-looking web sites in no time.
